A strategic, multidisciplinary storyteller: marketing, journalism, public relations and graphic design

My passion for storytelling began when I was a child: reading and writing fiction, and making home videos with my siblings to make my family laugh.

This passion followed me into high school, where I explored journalism. After graduating, I started my Bachelor of Professional Communication, where I majored in journalism. As an ABC and News Corporation intern, I told the stories of many industries around the country.

Journalism is a fantastic career to discover what industries you like storytelling for the most. My degree also allowed me to explore other forms of storytelling: public relations, and marketing.

As I progressed in my degree, I grew a passion for branded storytelling and the intersections of media and business. After I graduated, I landed roles for various communications streams and business sizes. I explored how these businesses maintained operation, and how I can use data to ensure my storytelling is relevant to target audiences and increase ROI.

See exactly how my career developed and strengthened below.

My work history

  • As a year 12 student, I was an intern for a week at The Gladstone Observer. It was here that I knew I was on the right career track.

In my short week, I grew industry connections and developed my skills in professional photography, news writing, editing, converting media releases into news, interviewing, and more. I also developed an understanding of defamation, copyright and ethical news guidelines.

  • I completed 120 hours of professional journalism experience as an intern for The Morning Bulletin.

I wrote both hard and soft print news, further developed my photography skills, and worked hard enough for my amazing Editor to offer me a cadetship!

Unfortunately, I had to decline due to a family emergency. But I was still called a “talented writer” and began to develop a deeper interest in how media campaigning relates to brand recognition and ROI.

  • When I moved down to Toowoomba for my family, I started my second journalism internship.

I completed an additional 120 hours of experience; but this time, it was not just print news experience: I grew skills in broadcast and radio news.

I helped run radio programs, had a bit of news voice training, and assisted journalists as they filmed for TV.

My skills here were also recognised; this time, by a Breakfast Presenter.

"You asked some great questions, which showed you have a natural curiosity. Even though you’d think that would be a given, it’s really not. But you asked heaps of questions that I reckon a lot of journalism students wouldn’t have even thought of."

  • I finished my degree. My first graduate job was at Signet: a packaging company with a passionate marketing team.

I learnt all there is to know about packaging and how to market it (even the boring products): I led the sales leaderboard in cross-sells and up-sells.

I also networked with the marketing team. Eventually, I was proofreading email marketing and the product catalogue, receiving high praise for it, and writing white papers and blog articles.

My team and I won Signet’s Bottom Line Improvement Project at Signet’s 2024 Sales and Marketing Graduation Conference.

  • I wanted to grow my public relations skills and be a more well-rounded communications professional, so I started volunteering for Foundations for Tomorrow.

As the Public Relations Lead, I managed the public relations team and liaised with other departments for FFT’s For Our Future Campaign.

My team and I developed a media kit, worked on traditional and new media releases, and narrowed down on who we would target, what their readership is like, and how we would target.

Our media efforts resulted in extensive coverage in mainstream and new media news: for example, in the Sydney Morning Herald, the ABC, The Guardian, Women’s Agenda, The Daily Aus, and more.

My Managing Director highly praised our work.

  • I really wanted to find paid communications work, so I landed a Marketing and Sales Coordinator role for a small business that specialises in towing parts.

It was a two-person marketing team… I learnt so much: SEO, website management, product description design, social media marketing, product label design, graphic design, audience segmentation, and much more.

I grew my skills in for-profit marketing for small businesses and cross-department collaboration. For example, I worked with procurement and production teams to support product launches: we ensured products were competitive, clearly positioned through strong UVPs, and had a seamless purchasing experience.

  • I had to go part-time for a few months for business operation reasons. To expand my skills, I landed an organic social media marketing internship with a Brisbane agency.

I worked with a not-for-profit client in the healthcare industry to raise awareness of their gala ball, and successfully achieved their desired number of tickets.

My client asked to keep my social media graphic templates and praised my work.

I was so happy to work with a not-for-profit.

I realised I liked both for-profit and not-for-profit marketing: but not-for-profit’s had a special place in my heart. I could use my skills to help social causes.

  • I love to volunteer to help fantastic causes. So when a position opened up at one of my favourite news organisations, I knew I had to apply.

Run by an 18-year-old Melbourne high school graduate, who founded the organisation when he was 11, 6 New’s entire team is youth-led, innovative, and credible.

Currently, I write breaking local, state and international news based on interviews and pitch my own stories. I will also be translating print news into social media posts.

I am thrilled at the opportunity to brush up on my journalism skills.
