As a part of my university unit, I had to complete 120 hours of journalism experience and create a portfolio of my work. I chose The Morning Bulletin in Rockhampton.
I had already completed a substantial amount of study toward my Bachelor of Professional Communications (Journalism) degree.
I was excited to network, learn and create with real journalists.

To whom it may concern, for the past two months, Penny Hoffmann has carried out regular work experience in the Morning Bulletin newsroom.
During her time at the Bulletin, Penny has shadowed reporters and worked independently to produce content for the Morning Bulletin website and partner print product The Courier Mail.
From attending the scene of breaking news incidents such as car crashes, to joining the media scrum at political and police press conferences, Penny has assisted in covering a wide variety of news matters.
Of particular note, Penny attended Beef Australia 2021 on multiple days to report on and photograph one of the biggest agricultural events in Australia.
She worked efficiently to source, produce and file content from the event’s media hub to meet daily deadlines.
Penny has also been regularly tasked with re-working press releases submitted by community organisations and councils to better suit the Morning Bulletin’s readership base. Penny did this excellently and always sourced extra information and edited the releases to suit the publication’s style.
Penny always takes a polite and professional approach to her work and this is reflected in her interactions with the general public and public figures both in person and over the phone while conducting interviews or taking photographs.
Penny is eager to learn and is not afraid to ask questions to better understand a process or approach.
She is a talented writer and has been an asset to the Morning Bulletin team in recent weeks.
The outcome
A very happy Editor (and Lecturer)
